每个星期三下午，她就会来到他那简陋的公寓，两人一语不发，只是脱去衣服，在地板上疯狂地做爱。在充分享受了肉体的欢愉之后，她就穿上衣服，默然离去。除此之外，再没有别的交流。他们互相不知道对方的名字、身份，但却一次次地继续着不成文的约定。
　　终于有一天，他不再满足于这种单纯的肉体上的亲密，而试图了解这个陌生女人在星期三下午之外的生活。两人之间的关系开始发生改变，一切都在慢慢地揭开……

The filmmaker says that Intimacy starts where most films leave off: in bed, or more precisely on the floor, because that's exactly where Jay and Claire's Wednesday appointments are held: they meet to have sex, and both stick to an unwritten vow of silence. They know nothing about each other, and when Jay feels the need to find out his partner's identity their relationship begins to fall apart. From the time Jay begins to probe into her private life Claire ceases to come for their unspoken, though once regular, Wednesday appointments. Jay decides to act . . .

"So as to render their sweaty encounters as untitillating as possible, Chereau never uses attractive lens filters, slick camera moves, or exciting editing, and so the ill-at-ease relationship of this inarticulate couple comes through all the more powerfully. This is also due to two full, textured performances, from Mark Rylance and Kerry Fox, who are such good actors that they convey pain or loss with the smallest twitch of a mouth or the briefest glance."
